“Akor” silver and turquoise ear ornaments, Tibet

Pair of Tibetan Women’s earrings or temple ornaments, called “Akor”.

First to half of XXth century.

Lhasa women wore this type of ear ornament with ends in the form of stylized lotus buds. They hung at either side of the face hiding both ears and facing forwards to show their inset stones.

Due to their considerable weight, they were either attached with small hooks to the headdress or hung over the head. Similar ones can be seen among the offerings made by devotees on the tombs of the 11th, 12th and 13th Dalai Lamas in the Potala Palace in Lhasa.
