Kasena ivory bracelet “gungulu”, West Africa

Old Kasena and Gurunsi ivory bracelet, cut longitudinally from the tusk of an elephant, hence its curve shape and considerable size. Such armlets are a sign of prosperity and are sometimes worn as a means of identification with one’s dead father or as protection from troublesome bush spirits.

It is used combined with a marble “Hombori” bracelet on the other arm.

Worn in Northern Ghana and Burkina Faso.

From the end of the 19th beginning of the 20th Century.
