Rajasthan earrings “Pupat”, India
Rajasthan old earrings called “Pupat”, worn by the Mutwa Muslim community living in Kutch. This group of people settled in this area 250 years ago after their ancestors emigrated from Arabia to Sindh and Kutch, where the kings gave them shelter. Only married women are allowed to wear this earlobe ornament.
The “Pupat” earrings are composed of a solid silver frame with sun shaped decoration of gold foil over wax. Patterns are cut into the foil and coloured glass stones are inserted into the wax.
Some gold foil is missing, as are some glass beads. Small dangles hang from both sides of the earrings. Very special earrings, rarely seen onmarket, with a wonderful patina.
These earrings measure 9,5 cm high (3,74 in) and 3 cm wide (1,18 in).
They both weigh 43 gr.
