Silver and turquoise gau, Tibet

Silver and turquoise nomadic woman’s gau box with an outer border of narrow, repeating lotus petals, a row of cable wire, a row of Endless Knots and a rectangular center area of tight filigree with a Tree of Life formed by two turquoises in the middle.

The clumsy, four-section lug on top and the three-section, horizontal dorje on the bottom indicate fabrication in Amdo Province, NE Tibet, where work was rougher than in Kham Province, E. Tibet.

Low-grade silver and turquoises on the front and plain copper at the back.

Early 20th century.
