Silver Qilin pendant, China
A high-grade silver Qilin pendant amulet from China.
From the end of the XIXth or early XXth Century, Qing dynasty.
The Qilin has the head of a dragon, fleshy horns, a scaly body shaped like a deer, the hooves of a horse and the tail of a lion.
In Chinese mythology, the Qilin initially symbolized wisdom, and gradually developed into a creature that could bring sons with the talent to become high officials or scholars. A woman in the Qing Dynasty who hoped for industrious offspring owned a silver amulet depicting a mounted qilin, like this one.
