Turkoman Yomud guljaka, Central Asia
The gulkaya is a sort of button that was used as a collar stud – see the stud at the back – to close the neck of a piece of clothing. The guljaka is worn every day and it is not part of wedding jewellery.
This ornament emerged towards the end of the 19th century among the western and probably also the northern Yomud, and it spread later on to the rest of the Turkmen tribes.
Made of fire gilded silver appliques and glass.
First half of the 20th century.
